Distinguished and Famous people from The Shire & Sutherland

๐Ÿ Steve Smith

Steve Smith was already attracting attention as a Menai High School cricketer when future Australian teammate Moises Henriques encountered him in a school match. He first reached international cricket with a reputation for leg-spin and all-round promise before developing into one of the leading Test batters of his era. His unusual technique did not immediately convince everyone: Justin Langer later recalled badly underestimating his batting after an early practice session. Reaching 10,000 Test runs in 2025 supplied a fairly decisive answer. The Shire connection lies in the school and local cricketing environment where that unconventional ability first became apparent.

๐Ÿ„ Mark Occhilupo

Mark Occhilupo's first surfing memories belong to Kurnell in Botany Bay, where his family lived close enough to see the beach from home. In a first-person interview he recalled his sister helping push him into a small wave when he was about seven. From those beginnings he progressed to Cronulla, walking across the sand dunes to Green Hills with local friends. It is an unusually vivid picture of a future champion's early enthusiasm: beach expeditions, borrowed equipment and the awkward business of carrying clothes home through hot sand. Those experiences place the beginning of his surfing firmly within the Sutherland Shire.

๐Ÿฉบ George Burniston

George Burniston lived with his partner Don Dobie in a seaside apartment at Cronulla after returning to Sydney in 1963. He helped extend rehabilitation services after the war and promoted training for medical specialists when Australian postgraduate courses were still lacking. At Prince Henry Hospital his concern was the fullest life a patient could achieve, rather than the immediate hospital episode alone. Planning and collaboration with allied health workers were strengths. Away from professional duties he swam regularly, appreciated art and literature, and enjoyed music even though singing was not one of his talents.
